2014 was the year of Iggy Azalea when it came to successfully appropriating culture and being rewarded for it. But a recent Change.org petition wants to snatch an award right out of her hands. The petition, which already has close to 24,000 signatures, seeks to have Azalea’s Billboard Top Rap Song award taken away. And it’s not even because of her lack of talent.
According to the petition, Azalea’s song “Fancy” wasn’t actually eligible for the award it won. The petition reads as follows:
Iggy Azalea’s 2015 Billboard Award for Best Song has been proven invalid. The eligibility time period for nominations is March 10th, 2014 through March 2015. ‘Fancy’ was released on February 17th, 2014, nearly a month before the eligibility starting. This is unfair to the other nominees in these category, especially to ‘Anaconda’ by Nicki Minaj, who most likely would’ve won. Billboard did not follow their own guidelines and should have to recalculate these nominations without ‘Fancy’ as a nominee.
Something tells me that Christian Ferguson, the person who started the petition, is a die-hard Nicki Minaj fan. But in any event, Ferguson and all of those who signed the petition have done it all for naught because according to Dick Clark Productions, the company behind the Billboard Awards, there’s nothing that can be done. Well, maybe next year Billboard will follow its own rules and regulations.
