A suburban Philadelphia high school football coach has resigned after three senior football players reportedly sexually assaulted a freshman during a hazing the team called “No Gay Thursday.”
Longtime Conestoga High School head football coach John Vogan issued his resignation Thursday and made it effective immediately after three 17-year-old students faced charges stemming from an October 2015 incident in which the three seniors are accused of holding down a 14-year-old boy and sodomizing him with a broom handle, the Associated Press reports.
Although prosecutors say they have no evidence to show that the coaching staff at the Berwyn, Pa., school was aware of the incident or a hazing culture, school district officials noted that the locker room had “an insufficient adult presence,” which created an environment where hazing could occur, AP reports. The school has also relieved the varsity and junior varsity football staff of their coaching duties.
