A Pennsylvania college student is facing charges after allegedly putting bleach in his pregnant girlfriend's water in an attempt to harm the fetus, the Associated Press reports.
Theophilous Washington, 20, of Washington, D.C., is facing charges of criminal attempt to commit first-degree murder of an unborn child, as well as reckless endangering.
Washington is a junior at Millersville University in Pennsylvania.
“The charges are twisted and the intended result nothing short of horrifying,” District Attorney Craig Stedman said in a statement Friday.
According to prosecutors, Washington and his girlfriend were together Thursday night and into Friday morning. When the unidentified woman was leaving, Washington suggested that she drink some water from the fridge. She did so, and upon returning to her on-campus room, she felt a burning sensation in her throat and vomited.
The victim then called 911.
Washington acknowledged to police that he put bleach in the water bottle, prosecutors say.
“Washington, the father of the child, admitted to putting bleach in the water bottle,” prosecutors said. “He had stated previously that he did not want the female to have the child.”
A doctor who examined the woman said that she and the approximately 2-month-old fetus appeared to be unharmed after the incident.
Washington is being held in custody on $1 million bail pending a preliminary hearing Friday.
