When it comes to prenatal care and black women, the United States is failing miserably, and the consequences are deadly. A new report from Amnesty International found that African American women face serious barriers to proper care during pregnancy and are four times more likely than white women to die of pregnancy-related complications.
The report, titled Deadly Delivery: the Maternal Health Care Crisis in the USA, places the blame for the crisis on discrimination, a lack of nationally enforced treatment standards and barriers to proper maternal care such as poverty.
