Quvenzhané Wallis is set to make her television debut later this season when she joins the cast of Black-ish in a recurring role beginning in January 2019.
Deadline reports that Quvenzhané will play the role of Kyra, Dre’s younger cousin who comes to stay with the family for a while when her mother is unable to take care of her.
Although the young actress has no television acting experience, she made a big name for herself in 2012 when, at the age of nine, she was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her starring role in Beasts of the Southern Wild. She is the youngest actress to have been nominated for the award, and also the first person who was born in the 21st century to receive the nomination.
In 2014, she starred in a remake of the classic film Annie. She played the titular role opposite Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz, and she was nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture—Comedy or Musical category.
Now 15 years old, the actress is ready to join the Kenya Barris-created Black-ish, which focuses on a wealthy black family living in the white suburbs trying to raise their children with responsibility and black consciousness.
She joins an already well-rounded cast that includes Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Yara Shahidi, Marcus Scribner, Jenifer Lewis, Laurence Fishburne, Marsai Martin and Miles Brown.
Black-ish airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on ABC.
