As he killed dozens of innocent victims, Orlando, Fla., nightclub shooter Omar Mateen began texting his wife, asking if she had seen the news, CNN reports.
According to the report, at around 4 a.m. Sunday, two hours into his rampage, Mateen started messaging his wife. At one point, Salman responded, saying that she loved him, CNN reports.
A law-enforcement official also told the network that Salman tried to call her husband multiple times during the standoff. The calls came after reports of the attack started to spread, seemingly after she realized that her husband might be behind the attack. Mateen did not pick up the calls.
Salman is now facing increased scrutiny as more details about the mass shooting, in which 49 people died at a gay nightclub, start to emerge. Salman apparently gave conflicting reports about what she knew of Mateen’s plans, authorities told CNN. She also revealed to investigators that in the weeks before the mass shooting, Mateen spent thousands of dollars, including on the guns used in the attack.
Officials have also discovered that Mateen was posting on Facebook before and during the shooting, criticizing the American government.
“America and Russia stop bombing the Islamic state,” the gunman posted, according to the chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, CNN reports. “You kill innocent women and children by doing us airstrikes … now taste the Islamic state vengeance.”
His final post was a warning.
“In the next few days you will see attacks from the Islamic state in the usa,” he wrote.
