There is nothing more audacious than being the center of a federal and internal investigation but also announcing plans to seek the same political seat you may be booted from. But alas, we present: “Super Mayor” Tiffany Henyard.
The Village of Dolton mayor posted to Facebook an emoji-decorated post announcing her plans to seek reelection as mayor. In the post, she said she is supporting and endorsing a new village board. Meanwhile, the current village board have expressed through various village meetings they no longer believe Henyard fits the bill for being a mayor.
In their most recent meeting, the board discussed ways to make up for the village’s current $2.8 million deficit, per WGN. In Henyard’s absence, they considered selling the village fitness center and ceasing the lease of “high-profile” vehicles. Henyard stomped in an hour late to the meeting to “lay down the law” but was promptly boo’ed out of the session by the village residents, the report said.
In her announcement post, Henyard listed other boards that will be up for reelection included the park board and library board, encouraging residents to contact her if they plan to run.
“It’s time to be the change that is needed for the South Land,” Henyard wrote.
Henyard appears to have more working against her than for her. The village board hired former Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot to launch an internal probe into her alleged frivolous spending. Preliminary findings found outrageous spends including a $40k Amazon binge. Also, Henyard’s colleagues, relatives, trustees and more were named in a federal investigation into the village of Dolton as a whole.
Henyard’s risk of losing her seat also faces the campaign of Dolton Senior Trustee Jason House. According to WGN, he served on the village board for eight years. The report says his plans are to restore checks and balances in the village and rebuild trust with the community - both of which residents say Henyard has failed to do. Their reactions to her post says it all.
“Only place you’re going is jail,” wrote one user.
“You go girl! There is plenty of CASH you have not burned through. Keep gouging the population. They love your privilege life and that none of it goes to them,” wrote another.
“You need to resign,” wrote another.
Not everyone in the Facebook comments had something nasty to say. However, it’s unclear if her supporters will be enough to help her win the ballot.
