President Obama told gay supporters and donors at a fundraiser yesterday that there is still more work to do in relation to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues, according to the Associated Press.
Obama said that he's proud of his track record with the LGBT community, citing having lifted the ban on gays serving openly in the military as one of his accomplishments. He also mentioned hospital visiting-rights legislation and equality in federal hiring.
"The perception was somehow that this would be this huge, ugly issue," said Obama. "Since it happened — nothing's happened."
The private fundraiser, which had a $35,800 price tag for those in attendance, came on the heels of the state of California's decision to strike down their ban on gay marriage. Obama, who supports civil unions, says his views on gay marriage are "evolving."
The term "evolving" is one that President Obama has used over the last few years, perhaps to maintain a neutrality about the issue. Many in the gay community hope his position will firm up in favor of gay marriage if he is re-elected. Despite the lack of enthusiasm in the community for President Obama, the majority will likely vote for him, considering the Republicans' harsh positions on many issues that affect them.
