Add this bit of news to the list of moments to call up when we have to remind ourselves that the president is black.
In a conversation at UCLA Luskin School of Affairs, President Obama's former "body man," Reggie Love, was asked to describe all that was going on the night of the raid on Osama bin Laden's compound. According to Love, Vulture reports, Obama spent some of that day playing cards.
"Most people were like down in the Situation Room and [President Obama] was like, 'I'm not going to be down there, I can't watch this entire thing,' We must have played 15 games of spades," said Love at a public event.
The "entire thing" lasted around 220 minutes — about 180 minutes of which consisted of helicopter rides to and from the compound, during which nothing was really happening.
Playing a game of cards while a mission to kill America's No. 1 enemy is being carried out does not a peak black moment make for Obama. It's that he was playing spades, of all games. Spades. This is not to say white people don't play spades. It's just to say that we don't know any white people, presidents or otherwise, who do play spades.
