We all know that President Obama likes to joke, but did he cross the line when he praised the beauty of California Attorney General Kamala Harris?

By now you may have heard that he called her "the best-looking attorney general" during remarks at a fundraiser in Atherton, Calif., according to ABC News.

"You have to be careful to, first of all, say she is brilliant and she is dedicated and she is tough, and she is exactly what you'd want in anybody who is administering the law, and making sure that everybody is getting a fair shake. She also happens to be by far the best-looking attorney general in the country — Kamala Harris is here."

"It's true! C'mon," he said as the crowd laughed, according to a report provided by a print reporter at the home of John Goldman, an heir to the Levi-Strauss fortune.

"And she is a great friend and has just been a great supporter for many, many years. She's brilliant and she's dedicated," Obama said at a luncheon fundraiser benefiting the DNC.

The Daily News reports that some critics took to Twitter to condemn his remarks as "awkward" and "sexist."

"Obama's comment about Kamala Harris is disgraceful and really terrible for workplace equality," tweeted New York magazine writer Jonathan Chait.

Not surprisingly, the Republican National Committee quickly pounced on Obama, posting a snarky Twitter message.

"Not awkward and perfectly fine for him to say, right?" it said.

While the remark left plenty of observers hot and bothered, it didn't offend everyone: "How did it become so difficult to call a woman good looking in public," tweeted Politico media reporter Dylan Byers.
