The New York Post is reporting that President Barack Obama traveled to Dover Air Force Base Tuesday to attend a ceremony honoring the returning bodies of 30 US service members killed when their helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan over the weekend.
Two cargo planes — carrying the remains of the 22 Navy SEALs, three Air Force special operations ground controllers and five Army helicopter crew members — landed at the Delaware base Tuesday morning.
Obama was expected to lead a delegation of senior U.S. officials — including Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Joint Chiefs Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen and top Navy, Army and Air Force leaders — in saluting the flag-draped caskets of the service members, National Journal reported.
The 30 Americans were killed when their CH-47 Chinook helicopter was shot down by a Taliban insurgent using a rocket-propelled grenade Saturday — the most deadly single attack since the beginning of the Afghanistan War in 2001.
If ever there is an indicator that we need to get out of Afghanistan, this is it. Is the loss of life, including the scores of civilian deaths, really worth it? This has to be one of the hardest duties of the presidency: facing those who gave their lives for this country.
