Hundreds of Oakland, Calif., residents were at Oakland’s Lake Merritt Park over the weekend to prove that one Barbecue Becky won’t stop their grilling show. The festival was a middle finger to the white woman who called police on a family using a charcoal grill at the park two weeks ago. The viral video of the incident has now amassed over 2 million views and spawned even funnier memes.
People gathered at the park on Sunday, and it was a joyous occasion free of any angry white women complaining about the use of charcoal in a nondesignated area.
“This is about doing what we’ve already been doing and eat in peace, literally,” said Logan Cortez. “We’re not fighting for our rights; it’s already our right to do this.”
Just one look at #BBQingWhileBlack on Twitter will show you exactly how happy people were to convene at the park:
A local reporter even caught up with one of the men filmed in the viral video:
“She kept telling me I didn’t belong here,” Onsayo Abram said in an interview with the Mercury News. “I was born here. She was trying to tell where I don’t belong, but at the same time, I wasn’t trying to feed into her negativity.”
And that’s how you make your haters mad.
