Chyemil Pierce, 30, had just picked up her 9-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son from a Bay Area, Calif., day care when she heard shots ring out in front of her home. Pierce rushed toward her children to protect them and told them to run. When police officers arrived on the street to investigate the shooting shortly thereafter, Pierce was found suffering from a gunshot wound, the Los Angeles Times reports, and soon died.
Pierce’s two kids were found unharmed. Two other people near the vicinity—a man and a teenager—were injured. Oakland, Calif., Police Officer Frank Bonifacio said that the teenage boy suffered several gunshot wounds, and the man had at least one. Both were taken to a nearby hospital.
Police are investigating the shooting and have made no arrests thus far.
