A 19-year-old New York University student who lay trapped between a two-foot-wide shaft between a building and a garage for almost two days yelled for help as he drifted in and out of consciousness. Asher Vongtau also had thoughts of the movie 127 Hours, about a man who, while hiking in Utah, gets trapped under a boulder and cuts his arm off to survive, his mother told the New York Daily News.
Habiba Vongtau said her son, who fell down the two-foot shaft on Saturday morning, suffered a cracked pelvis, a minor skull fracture and perforated lung, the Daily News reports.
According to the Daily News, investigators believe Vongtau walked out of a service exit that's accessible only through the first floor of the dorm. He then walked up a metal staircase to the second-floor level, hopped a railing and stepped onto a landing for the adjacent building. He then slipped off that landing and plunged 20 feet.
A police officer happened to hear Asher's moans and called for help. Firefighters had to break through two walls of cinderblocks just to reach the young man. His mother told the Daily News that Asher wants to meet the men who saved his life, and even though he thought about the drastic decision the star made in the film, he told himself never to give up.
