When it comes to Black male models, Renauld White was definitely a trailblazer. In November 1979, he became the first African American male model and the second Black male (following Urs Althaus) to land a spot on the cover of GQ. White began his modeling career in the 1960s and worked with designers, including Ralph Lauren, Bill Blass, Calvin Klein and Donna Karan. Also an actor, Renauld was known for playing William Reynolds on “Guiding Light” between 1986 to 1992.

Once there, a counselor at the school convinced her to pursue a career in modeling and her career took off. Considered on the first supermodels, Sims made history as the first Black model to appear on the cover of Ladies Home Journal in 1968.

In 1971, Cleveland moved to France, saying she wouldn’t return until a Black model was featured on the cover of American Vogue. She made good on her promise and didn’t come back until Beverly Johnson made the cover in 1974.
