The New York Post and New York Daily News are in trouble with the city's mayor, Bil de Blasio, who has demanded that they apologize to his wife for distorting her words in an interview, the Associated Press reports.
De Blasio, who is still relatively new as mayor, said that the stories were "deeply disturbing" and "offensive."
According to the AP, in New York City first lady Chirlane McCray's interview with New York magazine, which was published on Sunday, she was quoted about how she struggled adjusting to her new role as a mother when she had her first child, Chiara.
"I was 40 years old. I had a life," McCray told the magazine during the interview for a profile. "Especially with Chiara—will we feel guilt forever more? Of course, yes. But the truth is, I could not spend every day with her. I didn't want to do that. I looked for all kinds of reason not to do it."
"It took a long time for me to get into 'I'm taking care of kids,' and what that means," she added, though reiterating her love for her daughter.
The following Monday, the city tabloids ran stories about the interview, depicting McCray as a "bad mom" or someone who didn't "want to be a mom."
"I was a bad mom," the New York Post declared with a bold headline, a picture of McCray blazoned on its front page, adding that her comments were "bound to horrify most moms," the AP notes.
The Daily News' headline declared that McCray "didn't want to be a mom," which her husband said was inaccurate.
"I think both the Post and the Daily News owe Chirlane an apology," the mayor said. "I think they owe all of us an apology for absolutely misrepresenting what she said and for caricaturing a reality that so many women face."
