Election season tends to be rife with gaffes and rather unfortunate jokes slipping out of politicians' mouths.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton casually put their feet in their mouths at New York City's annual Inner Circle Dinner roast Saturday when Clinton made fun of de Blasio for holding off on his endorsement for so long.
"I just have to say thanks for the endorsement, Bill. Took you long enough," she said amid laughter, Raw Story reports.
"Sorry Hillary, I was running on C.P. Time," the mayor responded to a mixture of chuckles and gasps. CPT, also known as "Colored People's Time," derives from a stereotype that black people are never on time, and thus is generally used as an excuse for being late or for some event not starting on time.
Actor and singer Leslie Odom Jr., who was onstage at the time of the exchange, quickly cut through, saying, "That's not, I don't like jokes like that, Bill."
"Cautious politician time … ," Clinton said, adding to the apparent joke, as the audience chuckled awkwardly.
