Kwasi Enin, the New York high school teen who was accepted into all eight Ivy League schools, has made his choice. Before a whole host of national media, Kwasi has decided that he will become a member of Yale University's Class of 2018.
According to the Associated Press, Kwasi explained that Yale had always been a front-runner, but a campus visit last week sealed the deal. "I met geniuses from all across the world, and everyone there was so friendly and inviting, and the residential college system there is just wonderful for each student," the 17-year-old said, according to AP.
Since the news broke that Kwasi, whose parents emigrated from Ghana in the 1980s, had been accepted to all eight Ivies plus several New York state colleges, he has been a hot topic in national news. Several news outlets covered his accomplishment, and Kwasi made a cameo appearance on the Late Show With David Letterman. He was even a topic on Saturday Night Live's "Weekend Update" segment, AP reports.
Kwasi's parents, Ebenezer and Doreen Enin, and his 14-year-old sister, Adwoa, joined him at the press conference. According to AP, the Long Island teenager wrote passionately about his love for music on his Yale application essay. But Kwasi isn't looking to make a career out of music because his current plans are to attend medical school and become a physician.
"Whenever I perform, whether as a bassist in [a] men's doo-wop group or as a violinist in a chamber ensemble, I become immersed in the conversations between performers and the audience," AP reports that he wrote in his essay. "As I become lost in these conversations, I create blissful memories in which I am truly part of my community's culture and eventually its history."
Ebenezer Enin told AP that he and his wife encouraged both of their children to excel in the classroom. "I believe you can do better than him," he said he told his daughter.
