The New York attorney general wants to know what really happened at Attica some 40 years ago when inmates took over the prison and state troopers and guards took it back, the Associated Press reports. During a five-day standoff at the prison in September 1971, more than 35 prisoners and hostages were killed.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has asked a state court in western New York to hand over the hundreds of detailed pages about investigations into what many have called "the nation's bloodiest prison rebellion."

"It is important, both for families directly affected and for future generations, that these historical documents be made available so the public can have a better understanding of what happened and how we can prevent future tragedies," Schneiderman told the AP.
