As conservatives continue to try to come for Anthony Mackie for his recent Captain America comments, the Marvel star is doing what he has to do to rectify the situation. Let’s see if it works for him.

As we told you on Tuesday (Jan 28.), Mackie became the target of conservative folks’ ire when footage of a recent promotional interview he did for his new film “Captain America: Brave New World” began circulating online. In it, he explained that he didn’t think that “America” should be one of the words or ideals that his character represents, but rather a person who “keeps his word, who has honor, dignity, and integrity. Someone who is trustworthy and dependable.”

Well, as you can imagine, those comments didn’t sit too well with folks on the right who hopped on social media to call the actor “woke” and even toyed with the idea of boycotting the film. Now, however, Mackie is clarifying his comments in an attempt to get the tempestuous crowd off his back.

Posting to his Instagram stories later on Tuesday, “The Banker” star wrote:

“Let me be clear about this, I’m a proud American and taking on the shield of a hero like CAP is the honor of a lifetime. I have the utmost respect for those who serve and have served our country. CAP has universal characteristics that people all over the world can relate to.”

See, conservatives? His comments were speaking to the universal appeal of Captain America and his values. He wasn’t excluding America, but rather saying the ideals the character represents are bigger than America and don’t just belong to our country.
