On Wednesday, white supremacist Chris Cantwell surrendered to authorities in Albemarle County, Va., after being charged with using illegal tear gas and malicious bodily injury during the “alt-right” Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Va., two weeks ago.
Cantwell, who cried on a YouTube video and appeared in a Vice documentary, did not receive a bond, according to the Daily Progress. Although he did not have an attorney present, Cantwell said he planned on hiring his own. The Albemarle County General District Court judge said that Cantwell’s attorney could request a future bond hearing.
The Keene, N.H., resident said that he was acting in self-defense when he sprayed counterprotesters at the Charlottesville rally. Cantwell faces two charges of illegal use of phosgene, tear gas or other gases and one charge of malicious bodily injury by means of a caustic substance or agent, according to the University of Virginia Police Department. Cantwell’s next court appearance is set for Oct. 12.
