Vaccine for Prostate Cancer Could Mean New Way of Treating Disease

http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/04/27/provenge.prostate.cancer.fda/index.html?hpt=T2

Finally, a silver lining. The FDA has approved a vaccine that can help treat prostate cancer. The treatment is intended only for men with "metastatic castration-resistant" prostate cancer, for whom hormone suppressant therapy has not worked. The real breakthrough is that it may serve as the blueprint for the treatment of other cancers and conditions, like HIV. We don't have to tell you what that means for communities of color. Excuse us while we skip around the office singing "A Brand New Day."

Dear Momma: Afeni Shakur Arrested on Drug Chargeshttp://www.ballerstatus.com/2010/04/27/tupacs-mom-afeni-shakur-arrested-on-drug-possession-charges/

Say it ain't so. Afeni Shakur, mother of late rapper Tupac Shakur was arrested for drug possession in Lumberton, NC. Charges include felony possession of marijuana, simple possession of a controlled substance and maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance. Translation: she's back on that stuff.  It's so sad that Shakur is still battling demons at age 63. The unsolved murder of her son and his constant image in the media probably doesn't help any. We hope she pulls it together.

Officer Martin H. Escobar has had enough. The Arizona police officer filed a lawsuit over the state's new immigration law, saying that it will "seriously impede law enforcement investigations and facilitate the successful commission of crimes." He's asking that local law enforcement be exempt from enforcing the law. In other words, he isn't going to be racially profiling his people. He does have to go home and clearly wants to sleep at night. The cost of filing a lawsuit - a few hundred dollars. Standing up for your people at your expense - priceless.

Finally, a celebrity adopts a black baby from America. That's good because we were starting to get an attitude. Sandra Bullock does Sandra Bullock, case in point: filing for divorce and announcing the adoption of little Louis simultaneously. We don't hear any Tammy Wynette playing in the background. Bullock is keeping it moving, literally and figuratively. And, she managed to keep the adoption quiet in the midst of the media circus surrounding her soon-to-be ex-husband's dalliances. Now, that's gangsta.

Distress Signal: BP Gets Help from Military for Growing Gulf oil leak

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100429/ap_on_bi_ge/us_louisiana_oil_rig_explosion

BP needs the military and the Lord. This story keeps changing and getting crazier by the minute. First there were two leaks, now there are three. They were going to burn the oil to keep it from reaching the Gulf Coast. The oil is traveling faster than they expected and may have already reached the Gulf Coast. The oil spill is manageable with swift action. This oil spill may eclipse the Exxon Valdez catastrophe. We don't know about you, but at this point, we don't want to hear anything else. Stop talking and start doing. The Gulf Coast already has to sustain natural disasters and now this unnatural disaster? Shaking our heads.
