Father Augustine Tolton of Chicago could become the Catholic Church's first saint of African American descent. The archdiocese is making its argument to canonize Tolton, a former slave in Missouri who was the first U.S. priest of African descent. He escaped to Illinois during the Civil War, served in the Union Army, and later joined the Catholic Church.

Texas Conservatives Approve Radical Changes to Textbooks
In Bush country, separation of church and state is so passé.
The founding fathers would be rolling over in their graves - those who made the cut, that is. In the latest round of changes to Texas schoolbooks, Thomas Jefferson is out, removed from a list of revolution-inspiring historical figures by the board of education because of his belief in the separation of church and state. Apparently, writing the Declaration of Independence wasn't enough to qualify. To be added, however, is the "violent philosophy" of the Black Panther Party and the GOP's contributions to the Civil Rights Act.

There's likely more trouble ahead for Gov. David Paterson as yet another staffer finds himself at the center of an alleged domestic incident. Clemmie L. Harris, the governor's top aide and former roommate, got into an argument more than 15 years ago with his then-girlfriend, who called the cops when things got heated. No charges were filed, but news of the dispute couldn't come at a worse time. The beleaguered Paterson is under investigation over allegations involving another aide.
