(The Root) — This year marks the 50th anniversary of the year 1963 and the momentous things that happened therein. The assassination of Medgar Evers, the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church, the March on Washington — many of the events that spring to mind when you think about the civil rights movement happened in 1963.
Code Switch, NPR's blog on race, ethnicity and culture, is commemorating that year with the creation of a new Twitter account, @TodayIn1963. The account will "live-tweet" the important happenings of that year on the dates they happened. Today, Tuesday, Alabama Gov. George C. Wallace is attempting to keep the University of Alabama's first black students from entering the auditorium.
Follow @TodayIn1963 to watch the events unfold, and follow @CodeSwitch for more discussion on race and culture. Here's a quick look at the @TodayIn1963 feed.
