After hearing that Ka'Nard wanted to spend his birthday swimming in a hotel pool, Tod Chambers, general manager of the French Quarter's historic Roosevelt New Orleans hotel, told Reuters that the establishment wanted to make sure Ka'Nard and his family had that wish fulfilled.

"We really believe this young man deserved to have a great birthday," said Tod Chambers, general manager at The Roosevelt Hotel, a historic luxury hotel on the edge of the French Quarter, which is donating a night's stay to Ka'Nard's family.

"Obviously, we can't change what happened to this poor young man, but at least we can make his birthday a positive experience," Chambers said.

Ka'Nard — accompanied by his mother, his sister and a friend — will enjoy a limo ride to the hotel, a free overnight stay in a suite and a personal poolside cabana, along with dinner, ice cream and cake.

This is the second time Ka'Nard has been a victim of gun violence. Last year at his 10th birthday party, he was shot in the neck. Two others, including his 5-year-old cousin, were killed.
