A spokesman for Nelson Mandela said that the former South African president has been released from a hospital a day after being checked in, according to the Daily News.

Mandela, 93, who checked in to the hospital for abdominal pain yesterday, stayed overnight after undergoing minor diagnostic surgery. The procedure, called a laparoscopy, involved surgeons making an incision in the belly to insert a thin, lighted tube to look at abdominal organs.

"The doctors have decided to send him home as the diagnostic procedure he underwent did not indicate anything seriously wrong with him," President Jacob Zuma's office said in a statement.

Defense Minister Lindiwe Sisulu said earlier today that Mandela "is fine as can be at his age — and handsome."
