Greensboro police have discovered a few but vital new details regarding the whereabouts of 25-year-old Marissa Carmichael, a Black woman who called 911 for help but vanished by the time officers dispatched to her location.
Authorities say they’ve interviewed witnesses in connection to the case and compiled a timeline of what they know from the night of Jan. 14, according to WXII 12 News.
3:40 a.m. Carmichael called 911 from an Exxon and reported that a man she was riding with dropped her off and left with her phone.
4:19 a.m. A Greensboro officer is dispatched to the gas station to conduct a welfare check.
4:21 a.m. Officers arrive to the gas station and discover Carmichael is missing.
Authorities say Carmichael was last seen via surveillance footage getting into a car and leaving the gas station. It’s unclear what time she left the gas station but there were about 30 minutes in between her contacting the police and suddenly vanishing.
The report says the police found the driver of the vehicle she left in. The driver was brought in for questioning. At that time, the driver was considered a witness, not a suspect.
What Else Do We Know?
Carmichael’s family members have been on the search for her for more than a month now. The latest lead on her whereabouts stems from a chilling 911 call made where she appeared lost and slightly disoriented.
Carmichael called 911 in the wee hours of Sunday Jan 14. In an audio that was eventually released, she tells the dispatcher that she was at the Exxon gas station on 809 East Market Street in Greensboro, per ABC News. Appearing distressed, she asked to be connected to the non-emergency line. On the call, Carmichael mentioned that a man had dropped her off at the gas station and asked her to get something but drove off without her.
“I don’t know where I am in Greensboro. I just got all my stuff [thrown] out the car, he took off with my phone. I have no clue where I’m at. I have no numbers,” said Carmichael.
The dispatcher then asked if she was hurt but the woman repeated the same issue: she was in the middle of Greensboro without a phone and without a ride to get home. During the call, she never identified the man she claimed to have been with her moments prior. The dispatcher asked what she was wearing and explained that officers were headed to her location.
However... when the police arrived at the gas station, Carmichael wasn’t there.

Asked if Carmichael has been located or if any foul play is suspected, a spokesperson for the Greensboro Police Department (GPD) told ABC News on Tuesday evening that “officers are actively attempting to locate Ms. Carmichael.”
“The investigation indicates Marissa Kay Carmichael was last seen at 3:46 a.m. Jan. 14 at the Exxon,” the spokesperson said.
“Detectives are continuing to actively pursue all leads in this case,” she added. “Because this is an ongoing investigation, additional details are not being made public at this time.”
Carmichael’s mother, Sara, told ABC 45 News she believes her daughter was drugged at One 17 Club Lounge, where she was alleged to be before landing at the gas station. She also provided the police with the name of a man she believed was connected to her daughter and also called on the authorities to investigate whose phone she used to dial 911.
According to the missing person’s advisory, Carmichael is a 5-foot-4 woman and about 260 pounds. She was last seen wearing blue jeans, a white Tweety bird shirt and yellow sneakers. She wore long black and blonde braids.
