Just last month, 19-year-old Ravon Jordan was standing before the Fayetteville, N.C., City Council, speaking about gun violence and calling for the senseless deaths to stop.
"Since I've known about Cambridge Arms, there have been four murders all due to gun violence," Jordan said before the council on May 12, the Fayetteville Observer reports.
But now the popular Westover High School student is dead because of the very thing he was standing up against. He was shot in the head during a Sunday-morning gunfight between two rival gangs, the news site reports.
"Just a good kid all around," his principal, Thomas Benson, said of the track star. "A lot of our students knew him. It was unfortunate that we lost him. He had a lot of potential." According to Benson, some of the students returning to school had to speak to counselors regarding Jordan's death.
Police Chief Harold Medlock said that gunfire erupted on Sunday during a house party, where more than 70 teens had gathered. The teens started the party at one house before shifting to another, the Observer noted. It was then that at least 70 shots were fired, causing Jordan to be injured, reportedly through a car window. He died the following day.
"His friends told him to duck. Right before he could duck in time, two bullets hit him in the back of the head," Rometreius, Jordan's 21-year-old brother, told the news site. "They came through the windshield."
Rometreius, reminiscing about his little brother, said, "He loved to draw. He loved to design clothes." He told the Observer that sometimes Ravon would help him pick out clothes.
"For something like this to happen, it's just so unreal to me," he said.
