Charlotte, N.C., Police Officer Brentley Vinson will not face any charges for the September shooting death of Keith Lamont Scott, the Charlotte Observer reports.

Scott, 43, was shot in a confrontation with officers outside his apartment Sept. 20.
District Attorney Andrew Murray said that the evidence shows that Scott had a gun in his hand when he stepped out of his SUV while ignoring commands to “drop it” from the five police officers on the scene. Murray also said that the original speculation and reports that Scott was holding a book and not a gun were untrue.
According to the Charlotte Observer, after police officials announced that the officer would not receive charges, police were put on alert for the city’s reaction and were told that they may have to work 12-hour shifts.
Murray met with Scott’s wife, Rakeyia Scott, on Wednesday morning.
Murray noted that 15 veteran prosecutors were unanimous in their agreement not to charge the officer.
Additionally, a few people who had originally claimed to have witnessed the shooting later told agents of the State Bureau of Investigation that they hadn’t actually seen anything.
