(The Root) — Social media continues to change the way we do things. This is most recently evidenced by NBA TV's decision to televise its Social Media Awards this year. The awards, in their second year, will air on June 12 on TNT.

Voting for nominees and winners, which will occur via Twitter using the hashtag #NBASMA, will award NBA moments that generated the most buzz on social media. Categories include the 140 Award for "the player with the most impressive tweet of the year" and the OMG Award for "the team with the best video shared via social." Fans can also vote at the NBA's Social Media Awards website.

That the awards exist at all is a testament to the effect that sites like Twitter and Facebook have on today's society, and its jump from the computer screen to the television screen illustrates just how normative social media are becoming.
