Minnesota Timberwolves Anthony Edwards is the latest athlete to learn that social media has changed the game—even for the basketball best players. Whereas once we only new what basketball players did on the court—like Draymond Green’s recently aggressive faux pas—now we know all the details that also happen behind the scenes.
The NBA star had to make a statement after screenshots of a conversation he had with a woman he allegedly was involved with were shared on social media and went viral
The messages show Edwards discussing with the women about having an abortion, and he allegedly over her $200K to undergo the procedure.
It’s not our place to argue whether Edwards was right or wrong, but this is a conversation that the public, and fans of his skills on the court, would rather not see.
In a post made on Monday, Edwards wrote, “I made comments in the heat of a moment that are not me, and that are not aligned with what I believe and who I want to be as a man.”
He added, “All women should be supported and empowered to make their own decisions about their bodies and what is best for them. I am handling my personal matters privately and will not be commenting on them any further at this time.”
Surely it is frustrating for the people involved, but it’s also irrelevant.
This is similar to the Zion Williamson saga that happened earlier this year. The man’s entire sexual history was unwillingly put out for the whole world. I specifically wrote, “I don’t enjoy discussing the personal lives of NBA players, especially when children are involved.”
No matter how graphic, weird, and messy an athlete’s personal life is, perhaps it’s time everyone kept it to themselves.
