The award-winning movie The Help, starring Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer, took home three prizes at last night's NAACP Image Awards, according to the Daily News. The movie won top actress honors for Viola Davis, supporting actress for Octavia Spencer and best motion picture.
"I found my voice," said Davis as she accepted her awards. "I just emerged through The Help."
But the movie's triumph was overshadowed by the numerous emotional tributes to the Queen of Pop, Whitney Houston, who passed away one week today at the age of 48 in Los Angeles.
The ceremony, which was held at the Shrine Auditorium in L.A., dedicated performances and footage to the late singer. At one point, video was shown of Houston accepting an NAACP Image Award from Denzel Washington in 1994.
Singer Yolanda Adams didn't leave a dry eye in the auditorium when she sang "I Love the Lord, He Heard My Cry" as a tribute to Houston.
"We love you, Nip," Adams said, using the singer's nickname.
Actor Samuel L. Jackson awarded filmmaker George Lucas with the Vanguard Award. The filmmaker was honored for his body of work, including the recent Red Tails, about the Tuskegee Airmen. A few of them were in attendance and stood up with the rest of the audience to applaud Lucas for his work.
Other winners and honorees included Sanaa Lathan, Anthony Mackie and Regina King.
