Ellen Degeneres may want her some Kevin Hart on the 91st Academy Awards ceremony stage, but Lena Waithe prefers some true representation and intersectionality in that bitch this year.
At this point, everyone and their mama has an opinion on who should host the Oscars (A duo-hosting gig consisting of Maya Rudolph and Tiffany Haddish was a popular choice at one point), so Waithe naturally had to offer her suggestion, as Logo’s New Now Next reported.
“I like the idea of a really gay ass black person hosting,” Waithe said on the 76th Golden Globe Awards red carpet, preparing to present the Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television award with Halle Berry. “Wanda [Sykes] would be amazing.”
The Emmy winner also offered her commentary on Hart’s past homophobic comments and his subsequent apology tour on the matter.
“I don’t think [Hart] understood the ramifications of what he said. We should stand firm in what we did and try to challenge everybody else not to do that kind of thing anymore,” noted Waithe.
The co-executive producer of BET’s upcoming Boomerang believes Hart’s transgressions can serve for something larger than the media circus around it.
“We gotta make sure that the gay community is no longer the butt of the joke,” says Waithe. “I think we gotta make this a teachable moment.”
The 91st Academy Awards ceremony will be held Feb. 24.
