Subtlety has never been designer Jeremy Scott’s modus operandi; either while designing for his two-decade-old eponymous label or as creative director of Italian brand Moschino, where he’s been at the helm since 2011. During that time, the wild child designer has been credited with reviving the popularity of the 35-year-old brand, bringing his irreverent fashion sense and love of pop culture into play season after season.

Scott’s recent showing during Milan Fashion Week’s Spring-Summer ‘19 collections was no exception, as he brought his fashion sketches to life—literally. Scribble-printed suits, dresses, stockings and hats strolled down his runway, putting a cartoonish spin on what are sure to become highly recognizable status items next spring.

It’s this type of whimsy, coupled with an outsized personality, that makes Scott such a perfect match for good friend Cardi B, whom he dressed for this year’s Met Gala, as well as accompanying her as her date (Cardi’s husband, Offset, even made his runway debut in Scott’s New York Fashion Week presentation).

Now, Scott’s making his outsized aesthetic available to the fast-fashion set with his new collaboration with H&M. The designer debuted his Moschino x H&M collaboration at New York City’s Pier 36 on Wednesday night, with a star-studded cast of models and a celebrity-laden audience.

Supermodels Naomi Campbell, Winnie Harlow, Joan Smalls, Duckie Thot, Imaan Hammam, Dilone and more strutted down the catwalk in Scott’s capsule collection for the retailer, which was heavy on references to Disney, ’90’s-era MTV, hip-hop culture, Versace and Cavalli—think animal prints, puffer coats, and layers of gold chains, both in print and on persons. In an especially nostalgic touch, Scott brought back the almost obsolete CD (RIP), as both a print and as earrings.

“I thought about the mood of ‘street’, the mix and attitude of haute couture and humor, and the elements of bling-bling accessories piled up on top of each other to capture and create the look I do on the catwalk,” Scott told British Vogue prior to the launch. “I thought of it like ingredients for a feast, and I wanted to include all the ingredients to make sure it had all the essence of a Moschino collection. You get cartoon characters, you get gold, bold Moschino jewelery, you get sequins and shiny things, and a mix and juxtaposition of elements you don’t normally find together.”

Most won’t have the bravery to layer these logo-heavy and boldly printed pieces together as Scott did on the runway, but as separates, we expect these to fly off the shelves, likely becoming collectible items. Our personal fave? The convertible unisex silver puffer Scott sent down the runway, giving us the kind of retro urban glamour synonymous with ’90’s hip-hop bling, a la Missy Elliott and early Bad Boy—as well as evoking the gold puffer coat Beyoncé rocked during the Formation tour. If you really want to take the look over the top, pair it with his crystal-studded shorts or overalls.

Front row were many of entertainment’s up-and-comers, including actress Kiersey Clemons, Paris Jackson, Miles Ritchie, Pose’s Mj Rodriquez and Indya Moore—all dressed in Moschino x H&M, of course.
