The Associated Press reports that a judge has dismissed a drug-paraphernalia possession charge against former talk-show host Montel Williams. In January, Williams was detained at an airport after authorities found a marijuana pipe in his luggage. The judge dismissed the case Tuesday at the district attorney's request after the pipe tested negative for the drug.

Williams admits that he legally uses marijuana to treat chronic pain caused by multiple sclerosis and is participating in experimental treatment involving the drug at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. But he says that he simply forgot the pipe was in his bag, and apologized for the inconvenience his mistake caused.

The vocal advocate for the legalization of medical marijuana managed to get a bit of a pitch for the issue into his statement, saying, "This isn't about somebody trying to do something illicit. I'm really just trying to take my medication. Hopefully this issue and this incident will spark some conversations that will help more rational minds find a way to solve the problem and take the patients off the battlefield."
