Following Jonathan Majors’ controversial “Good Morning America” interview, the star received a slew of backlash for comparing his current girlfriend Meagan Good to civil rights icon Coretta Scott King. Now, the youngest child of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta, Bernice King, has spoken out.

She took to X to seemingly address the actor’s continued references to her mother as a woman who stands by her man.

“My mother wasn’t a prop,” the 60-year-old stated. “She was a peace advocate before she met my father and was instrumental in him speaking out against the Vietnam War. Please understand…my mama was a force.”

King also shared a link to an article she wrote about her mother. Back in 2017, her Huffington Post story—entitled “A Woman Purposed To Be A King”—outlined Coretta’s dynamism:

“Before she was a King, my mother was a civil rights activist, a member of the NAACP and the Race Relations and Civil Liberties Committees at Antioch College. Coretta Scott was determined that her life would serve to lift others. She was already a woman of great character. Before my mother was a King, she was a gifted vocalist and musician, whose skill and academia garnered her a scholarship to the prestigious New England Conservatory for Music in Boston. Coretta Scott’s path to Boston exemplified her commitment to being a woman of excellence.”

When asked about his relationship with Good in the segment that aired Monday, Majors stated: “She’s an angel. She’s held me down like a Coretta, I’m so blessed to have her. The relationship is still fresh you know, but I think I found her.”

At his infamous trial earlier this year, the jury heard audio of the former Marvel star recorded by ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari. In the clip, he said that she needed to live up “to the standards of Coretta Scott King and Michelle Obama.” Bernice King’s statement about this bizarre analogy seemed not only justified, but long overdue.
