Yahoo News is reporting that in the Million Dollar Money Drop premiere episode Monday night, contestants Gabe Okoye and Brittany May decided to try their luck in the category "Inventions." Host Kevin Pollak asked them which product was first sold: the Macintosh computer, the Sony Walkman or 3M's Post-It Notes. Okoye was confident that the answer was Post-Its. According to Pollack, the answer was the Sony Walkman. Gawker.com's Richard Lawson challenged the show, saying that Post-Its came onto the market in 1977, which is correct. When he contacted 3M, they said that Post-Its were not distributed nationally until 1980.
Show producers stand by the answer that 3M gave and the "integrity" of their question. It's in the phrasing of the question that makes the answer the contestants gave correct. We think show producers should admit the question was poorly worded and toss it out. If it were a test question, it would be thrown out, so why not on a game show? We suppose that if they admitted wrongdoing and tossed the question, they may actually have to deliver on the $800,000 that the contestants lost. To do that would, in fact, require real integrity.
