(The Root) — Brooklyn, N.Y.-based artist Mickalene Thomas will be taking her talents to the Brooklyn Museum in the form of her first solo museum exhibition, "Origin of the Universe."

For this exhibit, Thomas brought together 90 of her most recent works, including a film about her mother, a mural, mixed-media portraits and installations of furnished domestic interiors. She visually articulates black female beauty and sexual identity using rhinestones, colorful acrylic embellishments and collage-inspired methods. Her pieces are a combination of portraiture, landscapes, female nude and still life, with 1970s-inspired settings.

"Origin of the Universe" will run from Sept. 28, 2012, to Jan. 20, 2013, in the museum's fourth-floor Morris A. and Meyer Schapiro Wing.
