Michigan Assistant Attorney General Andrew Shirvell is "cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs." This grown man, who is an alumnus of the University of Michigan, has targeted Chris Armstrong, the school's current student council president, who is openly gay. Shirvell writes a blog in which he has called Armstrong a "pervert" and "Satan's representative." He has also defaced his Facebook profile, posting swastikas on rainbow flags and other racist and homophobic imagery, and posted disparaging imagery and remarks on the Facebook profiles of Armstrong's family and friends. If you think that's bad, Shirvell has been picketing Armstrong's house, all because the young man has lobbied for gender-neutral housing.

CNN's Anderson Cooper interviewed Shirvell, who seems completely oblivious to the inappropriateness of his behavior. Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox, Shirvell's boss, provided a written statement to CNN calling Shirvell's opinions "his alone," not those of the attorney general's office. "But his immaturity and lack of judgment outside the office are clear," Cox's statement added. Shirvell is able to keep his job because he blogs and protests Armstrong during his private time and as a University of Michigan alum. Uh-huh. Shirvell sounds like a crackpot who is obsessed with the young man. We guess the University of Michigan or the attorney general's office will do something about Shirvell's alarming behavior after something dire happens. Clearly Shirvell's behavior, which is escalating, is heading somewhere terrible. Shaking our heads over here at The Root.
