Michelle Obama’s appearance at Wednesday’s South by Southwest was the talk of the music festival. The first lady was joined by Grammy winners Queen Latifah and Missy Elliott to promote the Let Girls Learn initiative. And she also talked politics.
If you ever thought you’d see Michelle Obama run for president, sadly, it ain’t gonna happen.
“No, nope. Not going to do it,” she told the Austin, Texas, SXSW crowd.
Of course, she has two good reasons: Sasha and Malia.
“The daughters of a president. Just think about it. Come on, young people. Not so easy,” Obama said. “They’ve handled it with grace and with poise, but enough. Enough.”
Although she says she’s never running for president and the time is almost up for the Obama family to leave the White House, the first lady also says she’s not leaving the public eye.
“Sometimes there’s much more you can do outside the White House without the constraints, the lights and the cameras, and the partisanship,” Obama said. “There’s a potential that my voice can be heard by people who can’t hear me now because I’m Michelle Obama, the first lady. I want to be able to impact as many people as possible in an unbiased way to try to keep reaching people. I think I can do that just as well by not being president of the United States.”
Well, thank God for that!
