Anthony McCartney of the Associated Press is reporting that the manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray has moved into its second week, with prosecutors chronologically laying out the events of the day that music legend Michael Jackson died. Authorities contend that Murray gave Jackson a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol and other sedatives in the singer's bedroom in 2009.
Murray's attorneys are presenting jurors with an alternate theory: that Jackson gave himself the lethal dose when Murray left the room.
The Houston-based cardiologist has pleaded not guilty. Murray, 58, faces four years behind bars and the loss of his medical license if convicted.
Even though Murray deserves a trial, we don't understand how he can argue that Jackson killed himself when he was under the influence of such a powerful sedative that actually killed him. Murray better hope that his lawyers will be able to clear that hurdle. From what we can tell, it looks like greed, incompetence and nonchalant behavior led to a toxic combination that ultimately killed the pop legend.
