File this under “I’m not an immigrant but you are”: Deplorable First lady Melania Trump wore a cargo jacket that would better be described as “IDGAF” than “insensitive” during her “surprise” trip to Texas (doubtful, since there were painted signs welcoming her upon arrival) to visit immigrant children heartlessly separated from their parents.
The back of the coat in question, which retails for $39, was emblazoned with the words, “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?” It was produced by popular retailer Zara, who likely had no idea its design would be used to “signal [Trump’s] base that this is all PR,” in the words of our politics editor, Jason Johnson.
The first lady’s spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, dismissed the nonverbal insult as insignificant, telling ABC reporter Meredith McGraw: “It’s a jacket. There was no hidden message. After today’s important visit to Texas, I hope this isn’t what the media is going to choose to focus on.”
Nope. We’re focused. And we got the message, loud and clear.
No one in the world believes that the sartorial choices of the first lady of the formerly freest country in the world are meaningless. After all, the fashion statements of first ladies have been front page news since Jacqueline Kennedy, so we certainly don’t believe that a former model is ignorant of that fact—however ignorant she may be otherwise.
Seriously, why would a first lady of any country even own—let alone consider wearing in public—a garment with this message?
But if we had any lingering questions as to whether Melania—a woman who has claimed to prioritize motherhood—is complicit in her husband’s evil and barbaric policies regarding non-European immigrant families, look no further.
She spelled it out for us.
