According to the news station, the accused gunman opened fire around 4:30 p.m. Sunday on a police station in Landover, Md. Police Officer 1st Class Jacai Colson, 28, returned fire and was shot in the incident. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The suspect was wounded in the shootout and is expected to survive, authorities said. A second suspect who, according to authorities, was present when the shooting began but fled once the gunfire began was arrested, Reuters reports.

Police did not identify either suspect and added that there was no explanation as to what might have caused the incident.

“It wasn’t about anything,” Prince George’s County Police Chief Henry Stawinski told reporters at a news conference outside the hospital where Colson died. “My understanding is he opened fire on the first officer he saw and then continued that conduct as officers became aware of what was going on, and then several officers engaged him.”

“This man launched an attack on a police station and engaged several Prince George’s County police officers in a gunfight, to which they responded heroically,” Stawinski added.
