Andrew Hardy has one cool head on his shoulders.
The 53-year-old Queens, N.Y., resident became an Internet sensation when he strolled into a neighborhood McDonald’s with a knife literally stuck in the middle of his back, his phone to his ear.
“Yo, we might not be going to the movies. I got a knife sticking out my back,” the New York Post reports Hardy saying. He was on the phone with his daughter, delivering the bad news almost nonchalantly.
According to the Post, Hardy was supposed to see Think Like a Man Too with his 22-year-old daughter when he tried to intervene in a street fight on Tuesday.
“Me and my daughter was supposed to be spending quality time together,” he told the Post in an interview. “We were meeting up that afternoon.”
That never happened because of the 10 a.m. street fight. Two men were in a tussle when another individual jumped in, ganging up on one of them. Hardy intervened, holding down one of the men, but that was when he was stabbed. He told the Post he walked into McDonald’s of all places for safety.
“When I felt [the knife], I just thought, ‘Get to safety,’ which was why I put myself in front of a camera, in case the dude come back at me,” he explained.
His daughter was understandably upset at the calmly delivered news. “I stood outside just talking to my daughter. Just staying calm. Probably longer than I should have—but that was my little comfort zone,” Hardy said. “She got hysterical, naturally … but I still kept my cool because, if I had really got hurt, stabbed-stabbed, I would have really known that it had hit some vital.”
