One of the many talked-about stories during the recent Sony email hacking fiasco had to do with a potential Destiny’s Child biopic produced by Beyoncé’s father, Mathew Knowles. The Sony email hack revealed that Knowles reached out to the studio about a possible movie focusing on the popular girl group, but Sony never confirmed any deal.
In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Knowles did confirm that he was still interested in making the movie happen. “Their story, which starts when they’re 9, 10 years old in Houston, it’s a … story that really engages you. It talks about their challenges, their successes, their failures,” Knowles told the Journal’s Lee Hawkins.
Although Knowles went on to manage Beyoncé when everyone went solo, the two eventually parted ways once his marriage to Tina Knowles ended. But Knowles said that at the heart of it all, Destiny’s Child was a movement, and he would also want them involved in the project.
“One of the great aspects of a Destiny’s Child movie … is the empowerment of the songs and the empowerment that Destiny’s Child has given to women. … I would also want the ladies of Destiny’s Child to be involved and engaged with it and get their support. That would be important as well. That story is very special to us, and we want to make sure and ensure that we get the right screenwriter, that we build the right team around it, and that we have the right network.”
What’s also still shocking is to hear Knowles say that he still manages Destiny’s Child and that the group never broke up. He even hinted at a possible new Destiny’s Child album. Well, that’s definitely interesting, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for a new release.
