On the heels of becoming the first black woman to be nominated for a best director Golden Globe, Ava DuVernay could make cinematic history once again. According to The Wrap, Marvel is eyeing the Selma director to helm a diverse superhero movie. The two movies mentioned are Black Panther and Captain Marvel, which are slated for 2018 release dates. If an agreement is made, DuVernay would become Marvel’s first black and first female director.

Marvel’s Black Panther will be the studio’s first movie with a solo lead of color. The movie will star Get on Up’s Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa, the prince of Wakanda, who must take over his father’s throne and avenge his death. Captain Marvel is also considered a diverse film because the lead character in the movie is a woman, Carol Danvers, who becomes powerful after a run-in with an alien. It would be Marvel’s first female-driven superhero movie.

If DuVernay becomes attached to either of these films, it will definitely add some much-needed diversity to Hollywood.
