When will these white folks learn that being black adjacent doesn’t mean they can say any form of the n-word or even “Negro”?
Martha Stewart, formerly the whitest woman in America before she did a bid for insider trading and started cavorting with rappers like Snoop Dogg, used the only-for-black-people word in a conversation with rapper Lil Yachty on her show, according to a recent Fader cover story.
Writer Rembert Browne detailed Yachty’s taping of Martha & Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party, during which they bring up his album Teenage Emotions.
Said album cover was not available because of clearance issues, and Snoop apparently took that personally, cussing out those corporate network shills and referring to Teenage Emotions as “this nigga’s shit,” which the shills were apparently ruining.
Well.
Stewart then repeated part of Snoop’s remarks to Yachty, asking him if it upsets him when Snoop says “nigga shit.”
Now, I don’t know if Martha got the Ebonics context wrong here, thinking Snoop was calling the album “shit” as in doo-doo, or if she was asking if Yachty objected to the n-word (a ridiculous premise, given how much rappers use the word) or if she was fishing for ratings—or maybe she just had too much Hennessy and Sour Diesel before taping. But Browne writes that the audience had “every imaginable reaction” after she dropped the bomb while wrapped in a sari, of all things:
So Martha, sitting at a table with her co-host, Yachty, comedian Gary Owen, and actress Laverne Cox, leaned over—while wearing a sari for their Indian food-themed episode—and, both maternally and ignorantly, said, “Yachty, does it upset you when Snoop says ‘nigga shit?’”
The room filled with every imaginable reaction: anger, horror, embarrassment, laughter, joy, pain. Throughout the exchange, Martha Stewart did not seem to understand what the big deal was. Yachty’s reaction: a huge smile. It had been a long morning of sitting and waiting, following a day of interviews that involved a great deal of sitting and waiting. Once he finally made it on stage, he was charismatic, but seemed to be running on fumes. When Martha had her record scratch moment, though, Yachty came alive.
Chile. As with Bill Maher, who recently dropped the n-word while taping his show, the racial gaffe won’t be included in the upcoming episode. It has been edited out.
