Whatever the future of Twitter, it will be remembered fondly for giving us the guffaws of life. And so it was when the folk from all around the world weighed in on singer Mariah Carey’s performance on ABC’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. Decked out in a glittery leotard and forever-inch heels, Carey looked great but sounded … not so great.
She got off to a rocky start with a rendition of the classic “Auld Lang Syne,” and it kinda all went downhill from there.
Somebody must not have given Carey the memo that “Emotions” was on the set; that, or she couldn’t hear through her monitor. Whatever the reason, shortly after the music from the upbeat track dropped, Carey’s face could not hide her displeasure. Talking through the track as it played, Carey said she “didn’t have a check for this song, so, well, just say it went to No. 1. … I’m going to say let the audience sing,” and then panned the mic to the crowd, letting the music play, prerecorded high notes and all. She followed up with “We Belong Together” and again refused to lip-synch. And then she walked off the stage.
And Twitter was off at it. Everyone has a bad night, but we think what galled folks the most was that Carey didn’t even pretend. Maybe that’s the lesson for 2017.

A couple of hours later, Carey seemed to take the snafu in stride. Like they say, “All publicity is good publicity.”
