Mariah Carey has some thoughts about her run with the Grammys. Despite a record-breaking and critically acclaimed career spanning four decades, the “Shake it Off” singer only has a handful of Grammy awards. While appearing on “Las Culturistas,” the podcast hosted by “Saturday Night Live” player Bowen Yang and comedian Matt Rogers, she didn’t hesitate to speak her mind about it.
In the interview, Rogers brought up the Grammy Awards, telling Carey that she doesn’t “have enough of those, by the way.” In classic shady Mariah fashion, she had a perfect response to Rogers’ comment. She replied, “They scammed me. They toy with me.”
Despite 34 nominations, Carey has only secured five Grammys wins. She won two Grammys for her debut single “Vision of Love” in 1991, and three more Grammys during her “Emancipation of Mimi” comeback era in 2006 — two for the single “We Belong Together” and one for the album itself.
Carey also revealed what she considers to be her “best” album: her sixth studio LP, “Butterfly.”
“It definitely has very special significance to me,” she shared. “...I think it’s probably my best album.” Agreeing with Carey, Rogers added, “I don’t know how it doesn’t have all of the accolades,” to which the “Honey” singer replied, “It has zero accolades!”
While “Butterfly” received some Grammy nominations, it took home none — a shocking fact considering the impact it had on Carey’s career and her fans, as well as the critical reevaluation of the album in later years. Some outlets have credited it for “changing the face of pop music.”
“I love that album,” she continued. “It has a certain feeling when you listen to it. It’s just got a lot of diversity, like you go from ‘Breakdown,’ to ‘Butterfly’ to ‘My All.’”
