(The Root) — Marcus Samuelsson, a respected chef and owner of Harlem's Red Rooster, said in a statement given to The Root that Sylvia Woods had a big impact on his career: "I first met Sylvia 15 years ago when she spoke at an event at Tavern on the Green. Her words inspired me to want to move to Harlem and become part of that vibrant community. From the first day we opened Red Rooster, Sylvia and her family were right there next to us, supportive and encouraging. She hired from within the community and taught me how important it was to understand our neighbors.
"Her legacy remains at the forefront with the celebration of the restaurant's 50th-year anniversary in August, and while we mourn for the passing of this incredible woman, I wish for 50 more successful years of Sylvia's in Harlem. She will be greatly missed and I thank her for the ways she's inspired me as a chef and as a part of this Harlem community."
